Meta is negotiating with several U.S. states over a potential settlement in a sweeping lawsuit that accuses the company of designing its social media platforms to addict young users, Bloomberg reported on Sunday, citing insiders.
The talks come as a coalition of 29 states, led by Nevada, prepares to unveil a "significant consumer protection settlement with a leading technology company," according to the state's attorney general. The lawsuit alleges Meta's platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, contribute to anxiety, depression and suicide among minors while illegally collecting children's personal data.
Meta has denied the allegations, asserting that it prioritizes youth safety and implements measures to protect young users. The case represents the most substantial legal challenge to date regarding the impact of social media on adolescents. Discussions remain ongoing, and no formal agreement has been confirmed.
