Meta Platforms remains engaged in talks with the European Commission regarding alleged addictive design features on Facebook and Instagram, according to a spokesperson for the EU executive.
The Commission’s preliminary findings, issued two years ago, concluded that Meta’s platforms may have violated the Digital Services Act through features designed to maximize user engagement. The discussions follow the company’s $18 billion settlement with nearly all U.S. states, though the Commission declined to comment on the agreement’s terms.
Thomas Regnier, a Commission spokesperson, stated that Meta retains the option to propose commitments to address the EU’s concerns. No timeline for a resolution has been disclosed, and further details on the ongoing negotiations were not provided.
