Meren Outlines Nigeria, Namibia Growth Plans at Water Tower Research Conference

Meren Energy (MEREN) outlined its capital allocation framework and growth pipeline at the Water Tower Research Virtual Insights Conference on Tuesday, highlighting near-term drilling restarts in Nigeria and multi-decade development options in Namibia and South Africa.

Management reaffirmed a through-cycle net debt-to-EBITDA target of approximately 1.0x and cited roughly $150 million in liquidity. The company has paid a $25 million quarterly dividend for eight consecutive quarters since completing its amalgamation deal last year.

Meren said its capital priorities, in order, are maintaining a strong balance sheet, funding high-return organic projects, returning cash to shareholders and pursuing acquisitions only when they offer superior risk-adjusted returns relative to internal development.

The company's core Nigeria assets—Agbami, Akpo and Egina—produce approximately 170,000 to 180,000 BOE per day gross, down from initial production of about 200,000 BOE per day. Individual field rates were cited at roughly 70,000 BOE per day at Agbami, 50,000 BOE per day each at Akpo and Egina. Lifting costs remain below $15 per BOE with operational uptime above 98%. FPSO infrastructure across the three fields supports peak capacity of up to 250,000 barrels per day and has planned lifespans extending into the 2040s.

An 18-month drilling pause, used to conduct 4D seismic surveys across all three fields, is expected to end as two drilling rigs and one intervention vessel return to Nigerian waters in Q4 2024 or possibly earlier.

Among near-term growth prospects, Meren identified the Ikeja discovery, located about 20 kilometers from the Agbami FPSO, where appraisal drilling is underway. The Preowei project, roughly 30 kilometers from Egina, holds an estimated 700 million barrels of oil in place with a target plateau of 65,000 barrels per day of liquids gross at Meren's 16% working interest. A final investment decision is targeted for late 2027, with first oil expected two to three years thereafter.

Additional Nigeria opportunities include the Egina South tieback, pending appraisal work, and the Akpo Far East exploration well, situated about 5 kilometers from existing subsea infrastructure. Meren described it as a low-cost test with potential tieback within roughly 18 months if successful.

In Namibia, Meren holds a stake in the Venus development operated by TotalEnergies. The project is nearing a final investment decision, pending final fiscal discussions with the Namibian government. Phase one targets about 750 million barrels recoverable at approximately 160,000 BOE per day, with first oil aimed at late 2030 and FID targeted before the end of 2026. Meren said its transaction structure with TotalEnergies shields it from development capital spend exposure, calling Venus a 20-plus-year opportunity.

To the south, Meren holds an 18% working interest in Blocks 3B and 4B in South Africa's Orange Basin alongside TotalEnergies and QatarEnergy. The first well is fully carried with the possibility of further carry support. Meren described the basin as holding multi-billion-barrel potential, noting that about two-thirds of the basin's geology lies within South African waters.
