A magnitude 5.9 earthquake struck Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido on Sunday, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake occurred at a depth of 46 km, according to preliminary data. The epicenter was located in Hokkaido, though specific towns or cities were not immediately identified in the EMSC bulletin.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency has not yet issued a tsunami warning, and no immediate reports of damage or injuries have been confirmed. The country lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active region prone to frequent tremors.
The EMSC, which monitors seismic activity globally, provided the magnitude and depth estimates. The event was logged shortly after its occurrence, with seismic monitoring networks continuing to assess potential aftershocks.
