Humanoid robots demonstrated superhuman speed at the 2026 World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing, outpacing human world records in sprints, yet still lagged in tasks requiring manual precision. The five-day event, held at the National Speed Skating Oval, featured 51 competitions, including 30 sports challenges and 21 scenario-based tests, with over 40% requiring full autonomy.
Two robots completed the 100-meter dash in under 9.58 seconds, the time set by Usain Bolt in 2009, while another model ran the 400 meters in 39.7 seconds, surpassing Wayde van Niekerk’s 43.03-second record. In contrast, the 2025 winning robot’s 100-meter time exceeded 20 seconds, underscoring rapid advancements in mobility. Organizers emphasized that raw speed alone does not translate to practical utility.
The games included unconventional challenges such as tug-of-war, weightlifting, tai chi, and a cable-connection test, where robots were tasked with plugging in a cable. Galbot, a Beijing-based startup, also announced plans for an autonomous tennis match. Industry figures noted the growing strain on battery management and thermal dissipation as robots push performance limits.
Xu Qiaosheng, a robotics investor attending the event, said the intensity of this year’s competition exceeded prior editions, demanding greater efficiency in power and heat management. Yu Chao, Executive Director of Lumos Robotics, stressed that practical value comes from robots excelling in real-world scenarios, not just physical feats. "Simply running and jumping doesn’t improve efficiency," he said.
Huawei, a technological partner for the games, highlighted the event’s role in advancing industrial applications. Hua Rong, Marketing Director at Zeroth, added that the true test lies in whether post-sale products can address user needs beyond demonstrations.
