Iran’s Oil Ministry announced the discovery of a significant natural gas field in southern Fars province, containing estimated reserves of 212 billion cubic meters. State media reported on Sunday that around 161 billion cubic meters of the gas are recoverable, citing Oil Minister Mohsen Paknedschad.
The field’s sweet gas composition—low in sulfur—reduces processing and operational costs compared with sour gas deposits. The discovery comes as Iran grapples with economic strain from its conflict with Israel and the U.S., alongside damage to its energy infrastructure from recent attacks.
Since the war escalated in late February, Iran’s daily natural gas production has declined by roughly 230 million cubic meters, falling from about 650 million cubic meters to current levels. In July, a senior government official indicated plans to restore around 100 million cubic meters of daily capacity in the coming months as part of efforts to stabilize output.
