Indian equities ended lower on Monday as losses in metals, technology and power shares outweighed gains elsewhere, with the Nifty 50 declining 0.39% to close at 24,210.80.
The broader market also reflected the negative bias, with the BSE Sensex 30 down 0.40% to 79,850.30. Declining issues outnumbered advancers by a wide margin on both the National Stock Exchange and the Bombay Stock Exchange, indicating broad-based selling pressure.
The Nifty 50’s losses were led by Adani Enterprises, which slumped 6.40% to 2,965.70, and Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, which fell 3.36% to 1,650.10. Eternal Ltd dropped 3.00% to 318.15. In contrast, ICICI Bank rose 1.44% to 1,443.30, Grasim Industries added 0.87% to 3,318.50 and Bajaj Auto gained 0.73% to 11,997.00, briefly touching 52-week highs.
On the BSE Sensex 30, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries led gainers with a 1.87% rise to 1,956.00, followed by ICICI Bank at 1.74% to 1,450.00 and Axis Bank at 1.50% to 1,283.00. Among laggards, Adani Ports declined 4.11% to 1,635.00, ITC fell 3.67% to 256.25—hitting three-year lows—and Bharti Airtel dropped 2.76% to 1,830.00.
Volatility as measured by the India VIX rose 2.46% to 10.94, reflecting increased uncertainty in options pricing. The rupee firmed 0.27% against the dollar to 95.11, while the U.S. Dollar Index futures eased 0.18% to 99.48.
Commodities showed mixed performance, with gold futures for December delivery down 0.68% at $4,499.30 per troy ounce and Brent crude for December up 5.69% at $91.02 per barrel. October West Texas Intermediate crude futures rose 3.45% to $86.28 per barrel.
