India's Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board has approved a 70 billion rupee ($731.49 million) expansion of liquefied petroleum gas pipeline infrastructure led by GAIL India, the country's largest natural gas distributor.
The project involves the construction of approximately 1,800 kilometers of new pipelines traversing six states: Telangana, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Karnataka, and Goa. Upon completion, India's common-carrier LPG pipeline network will grow by more than 23% to reach about 9,500 kilometers.
The expansion aims to enhance supply chain resilience by improving the movement of LPG, particularly during disruptions and emergencies. India remains heavily dependent on imported LPG, and the new infrastructure is expected to reduce reliance on tanker truck logistics, which currently dominate distribution. The shift is projected to lower logistics costs, improve road safety, and ease traffic congestion.
