Germany’s 10-year and 30-year government bond yields climbed to their highest levels in 15 years on Wednesday, reflecting mounting fiscal pressures tied to increased defense spending amid heightened geopolitical risks.
The surge in borrowing costs follows a sharp rise in yields across major Western economies, including the United States and Japan, where benchmark debt yields also reached multi-decade highs during the same period. Real-time data showed Germany’s 10-year bond yield at 3.266%, up 0.17% on the day.
A spokesperson for Germany’s Finance Ministry attributed the elevated borrowing costs to the country’s evolving security landscape, citing Russia’s ongoing aggression in Ukraine as a key factor. The statement emphasized the need for substantial investment in defense and security infrastructure, signaling a shift in fiscal priorities.
The increase in government borrowing costs is expected to ripple through the broader economy, raising financing expenses for businesses and households while complicating fiscal policy decisions. Analysts note that the combination of geopolitical instability and rising debt levels is creating a challenging environment for policymakers balancing growth and stability objectives.
