Ciena’s stock rose 1% in pre-market trading on Wednesday after Northland Securities upgraded the shares to Outperform from Market Perform and raised its price target to $500 from $450.
The upgrade followed data from peers Lumentum and Cisco, which Northland cited as evidence of strengthening supply chain dynamics. Lumentum separately announced plans to expand its critical pump laser capacity fourfold in the coming quarters, a move that Northland described as supportive of Ciena’s long-term positioning.
Ciena’s shares had slumped 8% in the prior session after gaining 6.5% the day before, leaving the stock well below its 52-week high of $637.51 and near its 52-week low of $84.41. The broader market showed little movement, with the S&P 500 and Dow Jones each up 0.1%, while the Nasdaq slipped 0.1%.
TD Cowen, meanwhile, trimmed its price target for Ciena to $575 from $675 but maintained its existing rating. The divergence in analyst outlooks underscores mixed views on the company’s near-term prospects despite the supply chain optimism.
Insider activity remained in focus after CFO Marc Graff sold approximately $2.15 million in shares on August 14 under a pre-arranged trading plan. The sale is part of a broader trend, with insiders having sold roughly $91.2 million in stock over the past 12 months.
Ciena is scheduled to report fiscal third-quarter earnings on September 3, an event that could provide further clarity on its operational trajectory amid shifting industry dynamics.
