Chinese President Xi Jinping told U.S. President Donald Trump that cooperation on artificial intelligence offers more opportunity than competition. The remarks, reported by state media, came after a meeting in the White House Oval Office.
Xi said the two sides should continue AI dialogue, exchange views on risks and benefits, and jointly guard against misuse or malicious use of the technology. He stressed that humans must retain control of AI and that the technology should support human progress.
The United States has limited China's access to advanced semiconductors used for training AI models and has accused Chinese firms of illicitly leveraging U.S. AI capabilities. Recent incidents have heightened concerns that increasingly autonomous AI could accelerate attacks and complicate containment.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, after talks with Chinese negotiators in New York, said the two countries discussed establishing a "U.S.-China AI Dialogue" and a possible alert system for AI incidents. China’s Commerce Ministry confirmed that senior trade negotiators held their first AI-focused talks with U.S. counterparts.
