Bernstein initiated coverage of Jersey Mike’s Subs on Tuesday, assigning a Market Perform rating and a price target of $26 per share. The stock last traded at $23.86, up nearly 6% over the prior week, according to InvestingPro data.
The fast-casual sandwich chain operates 3,200 restaurants across all 50 U.S. states, with average unit volumes remaining stable. Bernstein highlighted the company’s 20 consecutive years of positive same-store sales growth, alongside robust free cash flow conversion of 97% and an adjusted EBITDA margin of 47%. Gross margins stand at 66%, with trailing twelve-month revenue reported at $742 million.
The valuation multiple remains elevated, with an enterprise value to EBITDA ratio of 31x. Bernstein noted that Jersey Mike’s operates a highly franchised model, with 99% of units owned by franchisees. The firm’s proprietary whitespace analysis suggests the chain could more than double its domestic store base to over 7,500 units.
Expansion is expected to be driven primarily by existing franchisees, with Bernstein estimating that 90% or more of new store development will come from them. Projected cash-on-cash returns for new units are around 40%, while average unit volumes are forecast to grow in the low single digits, supported by pricing adjustments and increased customer traffic.
Growth drivers cited include social media engagement, limited-time offers, new customer demographics and expansion in digital and delivery channels. Bernstein’s initiation follows strong initial public offering demand, with subscriptions exceeding the offering size by 15 times. The IPO was priced at $23 per share, raising approximately $1 billion and valuing the company at roughly $7.3 billion. Shares debuted at $21, below the offering price.
Other firms have also initiated coverage with positive outlooks. Jefferies assigned a Buy rating, emphasizing the company’s asset-light growth model and potential for domestic expansion. JPMorgan initiated coverage with an Overweight rating and a $26 price target, aligning with Bernstein’s assessment. Morgan Stanley initiated coverage with an Overweight rating and a $29 price target.
