AVITA Medical said its PermeaDerm biosynthetic wound matrix achieved a 70% cost saving over cadaveric allograft while matching clinical outcomes in a multicenter randomized trial. The PermeaDerm-I study, conducted across 11 U.S. burn centers with 40 patients, met its primary endpoint with statistical significance (p < 0.001), the company said.
The mean treatment cost for PermeaDerm was $148.70 per 1% of total body surface area treated, versus $497.10 for allograft, a saving of roughly $348 per percent treated. PermeaDerm also reduced preparation time by 95.7% by eliminating thawing, tissue tracking and meshing steps, while maintaining comparable operating-room application times.
Clinical efficacy matched allograft benchmarks. About 94% of PermeaDerm patients achieved at least 95% graft take one week after autografting, and all patients in both groups reached at least 95% wound healing within eight weeks. No adverse events were attributed to PermeaDerm during the study.
PermeaDerm is a transparent bilayer matrix designed for temporary wound coverage between surgical excision and definitive closure, allowing clinicians to monitor the wound bed without removal. AVITA Medical also markets RECELL for thermal burns and trauma wounds, and holds U.S. rights to Cohealyx, a collagen-based dermal matrix.
The company hosted a webinar on August 18, 2026 at 4:30 p.m. ET featuring study investigators to discuss the findings.
