APA Corp. shares advanced 1.4% in pre-market trading on Tuesday after Argus Research upgraded the oil and gas producer to Buy from Hold and set a $48 price target.
The upgrade followed the release of APA’s adjusted earnings per share for the second quarter of 2026, which totaled $1.89. The figure exceeded Argus’s prior estimate of $1.79 and the broader Street consensus of $1.80. The company attributed the outperformance to a roughly 50% increase in realized crude oil prices and a 24% rise in natural gas liquids prices, alongside sustained cost reductions.
During the final day of the EnerCom Denver Energy Investment Conference on August 19, 2026, management highlighted further financial progress. APA reported $1.2 billion in free cash flow generated in the first half of 2026, with $750 million allocated to debt reduction. Structural cost savings reached $500 million annually, achieved ahead of schedule. The company projected net debt of approximately $3 billion by year-end 2026, down from roughly $9 billion at the time the current CFO joined.
Separately, Aker BP agreed to acquire APA’s stake in the Losgann/Froskelår North Sea discovery, including operatorship, as well as a 51% working interest in the Slagugle area. The transaction underscores ongoing portfolio optimization within the sector.
Broader U.S. equity benchmarks showed limited movement, with the S&P 500 modestly higher and the Nasdaq slightly lower, indicating APA’s gains were driven by company-specific developments rather than broader market momentum.
