Akamai Technologies outlined a bullish outlook for its Compute, Intelligence and Security (CIS) segment at Citi’s Global TMT Conference on September 9, 2026. The company said CIS revenue, which has historically expanded at mid‑single‑digit rates, is set to accelerate to low‑teens growth next year.
The outlook rests on a pipeline of edge‑compute contracts totaling $2.8 billion. The deals include a $1.8 billion Frontier Lab customer agreement announced earlier in the year, a recent $600 million contract, and a $250 million deal signed in the fourth quarter of the prior year. Contract durations range from four to seven years, with the largest representing a seven‑year commitment.
Akamai highlighted the profitability of these agreements, noting gross margins in the mid‑60s to mid‑70s percent and operating margins in the low‑20s to low‑30s percent. Capital expenditure is expected to generate between $0.50 and $1.00 of annual revenue for each dollar spent, with cash generation typically commencing six to nine months after capex deployment.
CEO Tom Leighton emphasized the company’s competitive positioning against hyperscalers, stating that Akamai can “go out there and compete head‑to‑head with the hyperscalers, the Neoclouds, whoever it might be, and succeed.” He added that the CIS business is “exploding” and will drive “real excitement” for the firm.
Akamai’s delivery business continues to represent roughly one‑third of total revenue, while the broader network spans 4,000 points of presence across 700 cities, anchored by a top‑10 global backbone. The firm also reported that distributed denial‑of‑service attacks are now ten times larger than in the pre‑Mirai era, and that a typical customer spends about ten times more on cloud services than on security or delivery with Akamai.
The company expects near‑term operating margin compression of about five percentage points, moving margins into the mid‑20s, as it invests in infrastructure to support the expanding CIS portfolio. The stock was trading at $106.79, down roughly 0.3%, in the latest session.
