Shares of Zevia Inc. surged on Tuesday after activist investor Kanen Partners called on the beverage maker to explore strategic alternatives, including a potential sale of the company.

In a letter to Zevia’s board, Kanen said the company’s stock had underperformed peers and urged management to consider a sale or other transactions to maximize shareholder value. The activist firm, which holds a stake in Zevia, argued that the current market conditions and the company’s financial position warranted a review of strategic options.

Zevia, which produces zero-sugar beverages, has faced challenges in recent quarters, including competitive pressure in the health-focused beverage segment. The company’s stock had declined prior to Kanen’s intervention, reflecting investor concerns over growth prospects and profitability.

Kanen’s call for a sale comes amid a broader trend of activist investors pushing consumer goods companies to explore strategic alternatives, particularly in sectors facing structural shifts. The firm did not specify a valuation or potential buyers but emphasized the need for a thorough review of options.

Zevia’s shares rose more than 20% in early trading following the announcement, outpacing broader market gains. The company has not yet publicly responded to Kanen’s proposal.

The development underscores the growing influence of activist investors in driving corporate strategy, particularly in underperforming segments of the consumer goods market.
