U.S. offers 81 million acres in Gulf of Mexico for oil drilling

The U.S. Department of the Interior announced plans to offer 81 million acres in the Gulf of Mexico for oil and natural gas drilling, marking a significant expansion of offshore leasing under the current administration. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) will hold the lease sale on August 20, with bids accepted for 7,200 unleased blocks spanning federal waters.

The offering covers approximately 38 million acres in the Western Gulf and 43 million acres in the Central Gulf, areas historically productive for offshore energy development. The move aligns with broader efforts to boost domestic energy production while navigating regulatory and environmental considerations.

Industry groups welcomed the auction, citing potential economic benefits and job creation in coastal communities. The American Petroleum Institute (API) noted that offshore drilling has contributed over $350 billion to the U.S. economy annually in recent years, supporting hundreds of thousands of jobs. Environmental advocates, however, criticized the decision, citing risks to marine ecosystems and long-term climate goals.

The lease sale follows a 2023 court ruling that reinstated five-year leasing plans delayed under prior policy. BOEM estimates that the Gulf of Mexico accounts for roughly 15% of U.S. oil production and 5% of natural gas output, underscoring its role in the nation’s energy mix. The auction terms include a 12.5% royalty rate on production, consistent with standard offshore leases.

Analysts expect strong participation from major energy firms, including Chevron, ExxonMobil, and Shell, which hold significant offshore portfolios. The sale’s outcome may influence future leasing schedules and broader energy policy debates ahead of the next presidential election.
