Swiss hotel overnight stays fall 2.1% in August, foreign demand down 2.2%

Swiss hotel overnight stays decreased 2.1% year-on-year in August, according to a preliminary estimate from the Federal Statistical Office (BFS). Foreign guest nights fell 2.2% while domestic stays slipped 1.9%, reversing the modest recovery seen in July when stays rose 0.5% after four consecutive months of decline.

From January to July 2026, Switzerland recorded 25.3 million overnight stays, 0.5% fewer than in the same period a year earlier. The BFS will publish a second estimate for August on September 22 and release definitive figures, including absolute numbers and guest origin details, on October 5.
