Shares in Suncorp Group Ltd. advanced 4.2% to A$18.70 on Tuesday, driven by a report that Japanese insurer Tokio Marine Holdings Inc. is considering a multi-billion-dollar takeover bid for the Australian company.

The move follows a Financial Times report that Tokio Marine, a leading Japanese insurer, is evaluating Suncorp as a primary target for a potential acquisition. The Australian insurer’s stock closed at A$18.70, extending gains from the prior session. The broader Australian market also strengthened, with the ASX 200 index rising 0.7%.

The Financial Times noted that Tokio Marine’s interest in Suncorp remains preliminary, with no formal approach confirmed or deal terms discussed. The report did not specify a timeline or valuation range for a potential transaction.

Tokio Marine’s consideration of Suncorp comes amid broader strategic shifts in the global insurance sector. The Japanese insurer’s potential bid would place it in direct competition with domestic Australian rivals, including IAG Ltd., which has also been cited as a potential target in the Financial Times report.

Earlier this year, Berkshire Hathaway Inc. acquired a stake in Tokio Marine, with one of the conditions of the investment being cooperation on large-scale international mergers. While the stake does not guarantee a bid for Suncorp, it underscores Tokio Marine’s growing appetite for cross-border expansion in the insurance industry.
