Roche Eye Drug Susvimo Wins EU Market Approval

Roche has received European Union marketing authorization for its ophthalmic treatment Susvimo, the Swiss pharmaceutical giant said on September 21, 2026.

The EU Commission approved the drug, which is designed to treat neovascular age-related macular degeneration — one of the leading causes of vision loss in people over 60 years old.

Susvimo delivers its active ingredient through a refillable implant that provides continuous drug release, offering what Roche called a "unique alternative" to the frequent intravitreal injections currently standard for the condition.

"Through continuous active-ingredient delivery via a refillable implant, Susvimo offers patients a unique alternative to frequent eye injections," Levi Garraway, Roche's chief medical officer and head of global product development, said in a statement. "This can help maintain vision while significantly reducing the burden of treatment."

The approval marks a meaningful expansion of Roche's ophthalmology portfolio in Europe, where Susvimo had previously been evaluated by regulators for years before receiving its marketing authorization.
