Joby Aviation to buy Resonant Sciences for $500 million

Joby Aviation Inc. agreed to acquire Resonant Sciences Inc. for $500 million in cash, the electric aircraft developer said on Friday.

The transaction, expected to close in the second half of 2025, adds Resonant’s proprietary battery and power electronics to Joby’s eVTOL platform. Joby plans to integrate the technology to enhance range, payload and safety margins for its five-seat air taxi.

Resonant Sciences, a privately held startup based in San Diego, specializes in high-energy-density battery systems and advanced power conversion. The acquisition aligns with Joby’s strategy to secure proprietary battery IP ahead of planned commercial service launches in select U.S. cities.

Joby, which went public via a SPAC merger in 2021, said the deal would be funded from existing cash reserves. The company reiterated its target to begin commercial operations in 2025, pending regulatory certification from the FAA.

Analysts said the acquisition underscores the intensifying competition among eVTOL developers to secure differentiated battery and propulsion technologies. Joby’s shares were up 3.2% in premarket trading following the announcement.
