Dax opens flat as political uncertainty weighs on German equities

The German Dax index opened flat on Wednesday, failing to capitalize on early gains and closing nearly unchanged at 25,548 points, down just 0.1 percent. Oil prices, which had previously provided some support, did not translate into sustained momentum for the benchmark index. Meanwhile, the MDax, which tracks mid-cap German stocks, fell 0.3 percent to 31,448 points by midweek, reflecting broader market caution.

Analysts highlight conflicting signals influencing investor sentiment. On one hand, diplomatic efforts to resolve the Iran conflict are gaining traction, while on the other, political uncertainty in Germany—stemming from recent regional election losses—has deterred international investors. Jochen Stanzl, chief market analyst at Consorsbank, noted that the market remains in a stalemate between buyers and sellers, with resistance at 25,800 points acting as a ceiling. German equities have largely been sidelined by foreign investors, who seek clarity on political stability after the elections.

Among individual stocks, Siltronic saw its shares decline 3.4 percent in the MDax, following a reduction in Wacker Chemie’s stake in the semiconductor wafer producer. Meanwhile, Krones’ shares fell 2 percent, as Bernstein Research revised its outlook for 2027 growth and questioned the firm’s 2028 revenue targets. The company’s beverage-filling machinery segment faces cautious expectations amid economic uncertainty. Gea Group’s shares also dropped 0.7 percent, despite positive margins and strong service business, due to mixed analyst commentary on its recent buyback and revised 2026 targets. KWS Saat’s shares slumped 7.3 percent, reflecting underwhelming financial results for 2025/26 and a subdued outlook for the seed company.

The broader market reflects a cautious tone, with oil prices offering limited support to German equities amid persistent geopolitical and domestic risks.
