China Literature’s H1 2026 revenue rises 11%, profit falls 84%

China Literature reported first-half 2026 revenue of 11.2 billion yuan, up 11% year-over-year, while net profit slumped 84% to 320 million yuan, according to internal presentation slides reviewed by Reuters.

The decline in profitability came despite a 9% rise in operating expenses to 10.5 billion yuan, driven by higher content investments and marketing costs. The company, majority-owned by Tencent, attributed the profit drop to weaker-than-expected monetization in its core online literature segment and increased competition in gaming and video content.

China Literature’s user base grew 8% to 420 million, but average revenue per user fell 3% as promotional discounts and pricing adjustments weighed on margins. The group’s cash position remained stable at 8.7 billion yuan, supported by a 12% increase in deferred revenue from subscription services.

Analysts noted that while revenue growth remained positive, the steep profit decline underscores challenges in converting user growth into sustainable earnings amid a crowded digital entertainment market in China.
