Box announced a new integration with OpenAI's ChatGPT that allows users to access, search and work with content stored in Box directly within the AI chatbot. The partnership extends the role of ChatGPT beyond general-purpose queries into enterprise file management.
Under the integration, users can reference Box files in ChatGPT conversations, navigate folder structures, preview documents and edit Box Notes—all while remaining governed by existing Box permissions and security controls. Files continue to be stored and managed within Box's infrastructure; the chatbot interface serves only as an access layer, limiting both user and AI interactions to authorized material.
Box's Model Context Protocol server underpins the integration, providing tools for referencing, extracting, updating and creating content without requiring data migration outside the Box environment. The capability is being made available to all Box customers, while OpenAI is rolling out access to ChatGPT paid-tier users over the coming days.
The move builds on an existing relationship between the two companies. Box customers have already been able to leverage OpenAI models through Box AI, and developers can currently build applications using OpenAI tools with Box content. This latest integration deepens the connection by embedding Box's file management directly into ChatGPT's conversational workflow.

"By bringing Box and ChatGPT together, we're making enterprise knowledge a seamless and secure part of the AI experience."
Sondra Batbold, product lead for personalization and context at OpenAI, said the integration aims to make ChatGPT "a more connected place to get work done, while respecting the permissions and controls people already have in place."
