Altcoins surge as Bitcoin consolidates near $84,000

Bitcoin (BTC) has settled near $84,342, marking a pause after a surge from below $63,000 in August to nearly $87,000 earlier this week. Meanwhile, altcoins have surged across the board, with 93 of the 100 constituents in the CoinDesk 100 index up over the past 24 hours, according to CoinDesk data. The altcoin season index reached its highest level in over three months, reflecting a shift in investor sentiment toward more speculative assets as Bitcoin’s momentum wanes. The CoinDesk 80 index rose 4.7%, outperforming the CoinDesk 5 benchmark’s 1.0% gain, while sector-specific indices such as the CoinDesk Computing Index and the DeFi Select Index outperformed the broader market, climbing 9.5% and 8.7%, respectively. Compute and DeFi tokens led gains, with Chainlink (LINK) and Internet Computer (ICP) among the top movers, while privacy-focused assets like Zcash (ZEC) and Monero (XMR) also extended gains, with ZEC up 15.9% in futures open interest and ZEC’s price rising 7% in the same period. The rally persists despite a major exchange hack: Bitget reported a $351.6 million loss from a backend system compromise, though withdrawals remain suspended pending review. The exchange’s $464 million protection fund covers the loss, mitigating immediate concerns. Macro conditions have softened, with Brent crude trading at $98.94 and the dollar index easing slightly, though European shares opened higher on reports of potential Strait of Hormuz reopening talks between U.S. and Iranian negotiators. Bitcoin’s futures open interest has declined below 700,000 BTC, signaling reduced leveraged activity, while Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), and Ripple (XRP) futures remain dormant. Zcash’s futures open interest surged 15.9%, alongside a 7% price rise, hinting at new speculative interest, though its near-300% quarterly gain raises caution about overleveraged positioning. Chainlink’s futures open interest outpaced its price rally by 28%, reinforcing fresh long exposure. On the options front, implied volatility for Bitcoin and Ethereum has fallen toward year-low levels, signaling reduced market volatility expectations. A $17 billion expiry of BTC and ETH options on Friday passed without significant market impact, with most trades centered on upside bets. Interoperability tokens like Quant (QNT) and tokenized treasury assets such as ONDO saw strong gains, with QNT up 9.8% and ONDO rising 8.4% in the same period. DeFi tokens like Lido DAO (LDO) and Ethena (ENA) also contributed to the rally, though Uniswap (UNI) showed minimal movement. Decliners included Solana-based DEX token Raydium (RAY) and Litecoin (LTC), though all three were up over 24 hours. The broader market reflects a consolidation phase, with taker volume drifting toward neutral and liquidations dropping sharply, suggesting reduced speculative activity and a focus on holding existing positions.
