U.S. stock-index futures posted modest moves Tuesday evening as traders parsed developments in U.S.–Iran diplomacy and continued tech-sector strength, looking ahead to a gathering between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping.
S&P 500 futures were flat at 7,831.50 points as of 19:47 ET, Nasdaq 100 futures rose 0.06% to 31,046.25, and Dow Jones futures were level at 52,264.0.
On Tuesday, the S&P 500 closed flat, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.36%, and the Nasdaq Composite climbed 0.45% to a record high.
Oil prices retreated sharply from multi-year highs after the United States and Iran held talks on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly in New York City. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, Iranian media reported. Araghchi reiterated that Iran requires an end to all U.S. hostilities and the lifting of a naval blockade before the Strait of Hormuz can be reopened.
President Donald Trump said diplomatic efforts continue toward a deal to end the nearly seven-month war with Iran.
In equity markets, technology and artificial-intelligence stocks outperformed, buoyed by optimism around Meta Platforms' recently launched Muse AI agent and investor bets that it will spur wider consumer adoption of "agentic AI." The shift in capital toward AI-related names has pulled money out of non-tech sectors including travel, finance, and software.
Investors are exercising caution heading into the U.S.–China summit beginning Thursday in Washington, where Trump and Xi Jinping are expected to address both AI policy and trade.
