Russia shares close lower, MOEX index flat

Russian equities fell at the Moscow close on Sunday while the MOEX Russia Index held steady. Declining stocks outnumbered gainers 133 to 99, with modest moves in major shares, commodities and currencies.

Moscow – Russian equities slipped at the close on Sunday, though the benchmark MOEX Russia Index ended unchanged at 0.00%. Market breadth showed 133 decliners versus 99 advancers, with 18 stocks unchanged.

The Russian Volatility Index (RVI), which tracks implied volatility on MOEX options, also held steady at 33.97. US Dollar Index futures fell 0.05% to 99.94.

Among the index’s top gainers, Rosneft rose 0.94% (3.40 points) to 363.75, ROSSETI was flat at 0.61% (0.00 points) at 0.05, and Surgutneftegas preferred shares gained 0.45% (0.18 points) to 40.63 in late trade.

The leading losers were AK Alrosa, down 1.13% (0.22 points) to 19.25, retailer Magnit shedding 0.96% (15.00 points) to 1,555.00, and airline Aeroflot slipping 0.95% (0.31 points) to 32.23.

Commodity prices moved opposite to the equity trend. December gold futures rose 0.37% (+$16.20) to $4,415.90 per ounce. Crude oil for November delivery fell 2.34% (-$2.38) to $96.08 a barrel, while the November Brent contract dropped 1.56% (-$1.63) to $103.19.

Currency pairs weakened against the ruble: the USD/RUB slipped 0.11% to 84.42, and the EUR/RUB fell 0.27% to 96.72.
