Roche announced on Monday that it has laid the foundation stone for a new manufacturing building, designated Bau 51, at its Basel campus in Switzerland. The project is part of the company's effort to expand its domestic production capacity for active pharmaceutical ingredients.
The Swiss drugmaker is committing 790 million Swiss francs to the construction of Bau 51 and to the modernization of the neighboring Bau 50 structure. The new facility will focus on the production of synthetic active ingredients used in Roche's medicines. Completion of the two sites is targeted for 2030.
Around 200 staff members are expected to be employed at the new plant once it becomes operational. The architecture firm Luca Selva Architekten is responsible for the design of Bau 51, which will feature modern manufacturing suites and related infrastructure.
Roche did not provide additional commentary on how the investment fits into its broader strategic roadmap, and no immediate impact on the company's share price was reported.
