P&G CEO Highlights Execution Focus Amid Commodity Pressures

Procter & Gamble (P&G) emphasized execution over strategy at the Barclays 19th Annual Global Consumer Conference, detailing operational fixes to revive growth in lagging categories and markets. Chief Financial Officer Andre Schulten and Chief Executive Officer Shailesh highlighted a 12- to 18-month window to restore strong sales and market share momentum, with a focus on addressing commodity-driven headwinds and regional underperformance. Brent crude, trading at $102.50 on the day of the call, had initially been projected to impose $1 billion in after-tax costs at $90 per barrel, underscoring the company’s sensitivity to energy price volatility.

P&G’s China market, which has grown at 3% to 5% for five consecutive quarters, is a key focus, with a two-year turnaround strategy involving distributor consolidation, higher-capability partnerships, and a shift toward digital and social media brand-building. Meanwhile, North America’s consumer-brand adoption rate surged from under 10% in the first half to 50% in the second, with a target of 80% by year-end. The U.S. category growth rate remains around 2%, though P&G aims to accelerate it to 3% to 4%.

Supply Chain 3.0, featuring unattended automation and dark warehouses, is expected to deliver a five- to ten-year productivity runway, while R&D has accelerated molecule discovery—six or seven new compounds in the last six months, compared to two over a decade in fabric care. Thorne’s vitamin and supplement business, growing at 30% with EBITDA margins above 30%, also drew attention. Schulten noted that while innovation may temporarily compress gross margins, it could accelerate growth by comparable margins.

Media and digital transformation has shifted spending from reach-focused experiments to activation-oriented social media, with content creation now fully in-house. Retail partnerships in North America now operate on a three-year horizon, treating them as both media and retail platforms, and escalating operational issues within days rather than weeks.

P&G’s dividend, yielding 3.05%, remains unchanged despite 42 consecutive annual increases, reflecting its commitment to shareholder returns amid operational challenges.
