Mining companies are increasingly consolidating adjacent properties into mega-deposits, a trend exemplified by a series of recent deals across gold, copper and critical metals.
In August, Barrick Mining and Newmont announced they would contribute previously excluded assets to their Nevada Gold Mines joint venture. Barrick added its Fourmile property while Newmont contributed the Mike and Fiberline deposits, with Newmont paying Barrick US$1.95 billion in cash. The combined operation is projected to form a nearly 100-million-ounce gold complex.
Agnico Eagle Mines consolidated roughly 2,492 square kilometers surrounding its Kittila mine and the Ikkari project in Finland through transactions involving Rupert Resources, Aurion Resources and B2Gold’s interest in the Fingold joint venture. Agnico Eagle estimates operating, development and construction synergies of up to C$500 million from the consolidation, excluding the benefit of eliminating property-boundary constraints. The company also committed to a three-year regional exploration program ranging from C$60 million to C$100 million across the expanded land package.
In the copper sector, BHP is pursuing a definitive agreement with Faraday Copper to create a new Arizona copper hub. The deal would combine BHP’s existing San Manuel property infrastructure and mineral inventory with Faraday’s adjacent Copper Creek project. Rather than paying cash, BHP is taking an equity stake in Faraday, expecting to own approximately 32.5% of the company at completion.
Meanwhile, at the exploration stage, Spark Energy Minerals is advancing its Arapaima Project in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The company controls approximately 91,900 hectares as a contiguous land package containing two drilled mineralized centers — Cruzeta and Boa Vista — separated by roughly seven to eight kilometers. An NI 43-101 technical report identified 123 pegmatite occurrences along 13 trends spanning approximately 31 kilometers of combined strike length.
Drilling at Arapaima has totaled 42 reverse-circulation holes, including a 37-hole follow-up campaign of 2,024 meters, with nine results still pending. At the Cruzeta target, hole ARA-RC-021 returned 32 meters from surface grading 73.9 grams per tonne gallium oxide, including 2 meters at 91.4 g/t Ga2O3, with 32 meters grading 1,947 ppm total rare earth oxides beneath it. Seven Cruzeta holes returned qualifying scandium intervals from surface, highlighted by 30 meters at 21.5 g/t scandium oxide in the same hole.
At Boa Vista, five maiden holes intersected gallium from surface with rare earth mineralization below. Hole ARA-RC-007 delivered the highest gallium result reported at Arapaima: 2 meters at 114.3 g/t Ga2O3 from surface. Additional notable intersections include 32 meters at 70.6 g/t Ga2O3 from surface in hole ARA-RC-030 and 28 meters at 1,557 ppm total rare earth oxides in hole ARA-RC-031. Metallurgical work is underway at Australia’s ANSTO facility, with plans to incorporate scandium recovery alongside gallium and rare earths.
