Matthews International appoints Michael Whitehead as new CEO
Pittsburgh-based Matthews International names Michael Whitehead as CEO, replacing interim leader following recent board changes.

Matthews International Corp. said on Friday it has appointed Michael Whitehead as its new chief executive officer, ending an interim leadership period that followed board restructuring earlier this year.
Whitehead, previously the company’s chief financial officer, will assume the CEO role effective immediately, the Pittsburgh-based provider of memorialization products and brand solutions said in a statement. The board did not disclose additional details regarding the transition or Whitehead’s compensation in the announcement.
Matthews International has undergone leadership changes in 2024, including the departure of former CEO Joseph Bartolotta in March. Bartolotta’s exit preceded a broader board refresh aimed at realigning the company’s strategic direction. Whitehead’s promotion follows his interim tenure, during which he oversaw day-to-day operations while the board finalized its executive search process.
The company, which operates in segments including funeral services and consumer products, has faced challenges in recent quarters, including softer demand in its core markets and pressure on margins. Whitehead’s appointment comes as Matthews International seeks to stabilize operations and refocus on growth initiatives outlined under its long-term plan.
A representative for Matthews International declined to comment beyond the statement issued Friday.
