Iran-backed Huthi rebels have taken control of the strategically important port city of Mokka in Yemen, according to military sources cited by Reuters. This development expands the rebels' influence over the Bab al-Mandab Strait, one of the world's most important shipping routes. Additionally, the Huthis have targeted the militarily significant Hanish Islands, with government reports indicating successful landings. The concerns over potential blockades have led to a 3.5% increase in the price of Brent crude oil, pushing it above $100 per barrel.
Huthi spokesperson Mohammed Abdulsalam stated on X that shipping and international trade in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandab Strait remain secure. The Jemen does not pose a threat to shipping, and the Huthi actions are defensive, targeting previously announced objectives. The operations will cease once attacks on Yemen end and the blockade is lifted.
The Bab al-Mandab Strait lies between Yemen on the Arabian Peninsula and Djibouti and Eritrea on the African coast. It is a primary route for crude oil and fuel from the Gulf region to the Mediterranean and Asia. For Saudi Arabia, the sea route through the Red Sea is particularly important, as the Strait of Hormuz is largely blocked due to the conflict between the US and Iran. Government reports indicate that Yemeni government troops have withdrawn south towards Dhubab to secure control over the strait.
The conflict between Saudi Arabia and the Huthis has escalated further. Saudi authorities issued four air raid alerts within 24 hours in the southwestern city of Chamis Mushait due to ongoing Huthi attacks. To prevent further escalation, Pakistan relayed a Saudi request to the Iran to exercise restraint on the Huthis. A high-ranking Iranian representative confirmed receipt of the message on Tuesday, but stated that Iran does not control the Huthis. The rebels joined the Iran side in the war in March and imposed a sea blockade against Saudi Arabia in July.
