Crypto Market Breadth Outpaces Wall Street as S&P 500 Internals Weaken

The S&P 500 is near record highs, but its internal breadth is deteriorating. As of Wednesday, 257 of the index's 500 stocks were trading below their 200-day moving averages — a widely followed gauge of long-term momentum that many analysts view as a warning sign when broadening.

The cryptocurrency market presents a starker contrast. Of the top 100 tokens by market value, 88, including Bitcoin and Ether, are trading above their 200-day simple moving averages. Most also sit above their 50-day and 100-day averages, forming what the data points to as a bullish configuration.

Several major cryptocurrencies remain well below their all-time highs, distinguishing current price levels from the concentrated equity rally. Analysts have pointed to institutional capital flowing through spot Bitcoin ETFs as a key driver of the broader uptrend.

"Sustained momentum across majors and select altcoins has catalyzed growing interest in covered call writing among investors who held through the bear market and are now targeting attractive yields at profitable exit levels," said Dick Lo, founder and CEO of quant-driven trading firm TDX Strategies, in a market note.

Lo added that Bitcoin faces an immediate test at the $90,000 psychological level, with its 2026 high of $97,900 standing as the intermediate target.

Not everyone is convinced the rally is structurally sound. Bernardo Brites, co-founder and CEO of regulated stablecoin infrastructure company Trace Finance, cautioned that capital is currently flowing into crypto primarily through ETFs rather than growing stablecoin supply.

"If ETF demand holds and stablecoin supply starts growing again, the rally has a solid base. If ETFs remain the only engine, the move is vulnerable, and Bitcoin could give back a good part of these gains as positioning normalizes," Brites said. Trace Finance has reportedly processed $10 billion in cross-border volume.

Bitcoin is also tracking a rare historical pattern, posting gains in July and August and looking set to close September higher — a three-month winning streak that has occurred only once before in Bitcoin's history, according to CoinDesk data.

In related developments, Nasdaq-listed exchange Coinbase announced it now allows users to borrow USDC against their Bitcoin holdings at a fixed rate. Separately, the U.S. dollar rose to a two-month high as prospects of near-term Federal Reserve rate hikes dominated sentiment, while Treasury yields fell across the curve amid mixed oil prices following U.S.-Iranian discussions at the United Nations.
