Apple's AI Push Falls Short as Wall Street Stays Cautious

Shares of Apple traded slightly lower Wednesday, falling 0.26%, as analysts judged the company's latest product announcements as insufficient to shift the stock higher.

At the core of the market's tepid reaction was a sense that Apple's generative-AI initiatives are behind rival offerings. Laura Martin of Needham & Company said the company's AI rollout across its iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods lines felt like "too little, too late" amid intensifying competition.

Martin highlighted Meta Platforms' Muse AI assistant as more automated and productivity-oriented, noting that it works across the entire open web rather than being confined to Apple's walled-garden ecosystem.

On the hardware side, the newly unveiled foldable iPhone is priced at $2,000 — a steep entry point for a form factor that accounts for only about 5% of total smartphone sales despite years of availability from other manufacturers. Martin acknowledged the device could give Apple CEO John Ternus immediate innovation credibility, but raised doubts about sustained consumer demand.

Alongside the foldable, Apple announced price increases of $100 on each model of the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Low-end iPhone models are scheduled to arrive in spring.

Overall, Martin maintained a Hold rating on Apple, writing that shares did not move materially following the product event and that her firm sees no compelling reason to change course.

The cautious tone from Needham mirrors a broader investor wait-and-see posture heading into a pivotal period for Apple, which is navigating both leadership transition and an industry-wide shift toward agentic AI.
