Chinese President Xi Jinping called for expanded cooperation with the United States on artificial intelligence during a state visit to Washington, telling President Donald Trump there was "greater opportunity for cooperation over competition" and emphasizing joint action against the malicious use of the technology.
Xi told reporters Thursday that he and Trump had reached a "common understanding on many issues," adding "new substance" to U.S.-China relations. He drew parallels between Trump's "make America great again" agenda and China's goal of "national rejuvenation," describing the two as "mutually reinforcing." The visit marks Xi's first state trip to the U.S. in over a decade.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who held talks with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, said the two nations discussed establishing a U.S.-China alert system for AI incidents.
The discussions came amid mounting anxiety over AI safety, following calls from several major U.S. frontier labs for a slowdown in development.
On trade, the U.S. and China agreed before Thursday's talks to extend their trade truce by two months, pushing the deadline into early January. Earlier this year, Trump visited Beijing in what was a diplomatic effort to stabilize economic ties ahead of further negotiations.
