Vox.com eliminated four positions in its first restructuring since James Murdoch's Lupa Systems acquired the digital media outlet for more than $300 million last year.
The job cuts, described as a "few colleagues leaving" in an internal memo from Editor-in-Chief Swati Sharma, mark the beginning of a broader review aimed at refocusing Vox's editorial and business operations. The restructuring seeks to identify growth opportunities and improve audience engagement across platforms.
Vox declined to disclose the total number of employees or the size of its newsroom when contacted. The changes follow James Murdoch's acquisition of Vox.com, New York Magazine, and the Vox Media podcast network, while Penske Media Corporation retained other Vox Media brands such as Eater, Popsugar, the Verge, SB Nation, and the Dodo under its PMX subsidiary.
The renewed editorial focus will emphasize societal shifts, power dynamics, and everyday economics, Sharma noted. Vox.com, historically recognized for its explainer journalism, plans to further develop its coverage in these areas.
Sharma is scheduled to provide additional details about the company's strategic priorities during an all-staff meeting on August 26. The restructuring comes as the digital media landscape continues to evolve, with publishers increasingly prioritizing audience retention and monetization strategies.
