USA Rare Earth, a U.S.-based rare earth metals producer, has partnered with Pasqal—a quantum computing firm—and Riven Systems, an AI specialist for industrial chemistry, to develop advanced separation technology for rare earth processing. The collaboration seeks to address a critical bottleneck in the industry: the separation of mixed rare earth carbonate into individual oxides, a step currently dominated by Chinese producers. By applying quantum machine learning, the partners aim to optimize extractant selection and identify new molecules that bind more effectively to rare earth elements, potentially reducing reliance on foreign supply chains.
The project will focus on three primary feedstock sources: Round Top mine in Texas, third-party mixed rare earth carbonates, and recycled cuttings from magnet manufacturing. Riven Systems will generate training data for machine learning models through automated experiments, while Pasqal’s neutral-atom quantum processing unit will benchmark quantum models against classical counterparts to refine extractant performance. USA Rare Earth operates across the rare earth value chain, including mining, magnet manufacturing, and facilities in the U.S., Brazil, and the U.K., with plans to expand magnet production in Oklahoma.
The partnership underscores a broader industry push to decarbonize and diversify rare earth supply chains, a critical component for clean energy technologies. While USA Rare Earth’s market capitalization stands at $16.6 million and annual revenue at $2.25 million, the company’s stock has declined 93% over the past year, reflecting broader sector challenges. The collaboration marks a step toward applying cutting-edge technology to a long-standing industrial problem, with potential implications for both efficiency and geopolitical resilience in the rare earth sector.
