Federal prosecutors in the United States have charged Edward Zimbardi with operating a cryptocurrency Ponzi scheme that allegedly defrauded investors of approximately $165 million. The charges follow Zimbardi’s deportation from Fiji, where he had been detained pending extradition proceedings.
Prosecutors allege that Zimbardi solicited investments from thousands of individuals, promising high returns through cryptocurrency trading and investment strategies. Instead, the funds were allegedly misused for personal expenditures, including at least $10 million in personal spending, while over $34 million was reportedly lost in currency trades. The scheme’s collapse left investors with substantial financial losses.
Zimbardi’s legal troubles escalated after authorities in Fiji arrested him in connection with the case. His deportation to the U.S. has now led to federal charges, which include wire fraud and money laundering. The case is being handled by the U.S. Department of Justice, with further investigations ongoing to trace the movement of the allegedly misappropriated funds.
