The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has opened an investigation into Trainline plc over the presentation of certain fees on its UK rail and coach travel booking platform.
The inquiry, launched under the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 (DMCCA), focuses on how specific fees are displayed throughout the booking process. The CMA will assess whether the presentation of these fees complies with consumer protection and transparency requirements.
Trainline said it has engaged with the regulator over several months and has already taken steps to enhance the presentation of certain fees. The company added it remains committed to full compliance with all applicable consumer laws, including the DMCCA, and will continue cooperating with the CMA to ensure its customer experience remains transparent and compliant.
The investigation comes as Trainline operates a major rail and coach travel platform in Europe, with its app holding a 4.9-star rating. The company did not disclose any potential financial penalties or timelines for the investigation’s resolution.
