Uber Technologies on Tuesday introduced a live video streaming feature for rides involving teenage passengers, aiming to enhance safety through real-time parental monitoring.
The feature, which uses the driver’s phone selfie camera, sends a notification to the parent or guardian account when a livestream becomes available after a ride begins. Both the teen and the driver are alerted when the parent initiates the stream. The video operates in the background and adapts to the driver’s device performance, with the app automatically pausing the stream if battery levels, device temperature or connectivity issues arise.
The rollout follows a pilot program in nine U.S. markets—including Atlanta, Phoenix, Orlando and Cleveland—where the feature was tested over recent months. Uber plans to expand the service nationwide in the coming weeks. The company stated the feature will only activate if drivers opt in for eligible teen rides.
Uber’s teen ride service, launched in 2023, matches passengers aged 13 to 17 with highly rated, experienced drivers. Since its introduction, the service has completed tens of millions of trips across more than 50 countries worldwide.
