Demand for tokenized equities has accelerated sharply, with perpetual futures volume expanding from $16 billion to more than $590 billion in a single year, according to market data. The rapid expansion underscores growing institutional and retail appetite for blockchain-based representations of traditional assets. However, the headline growth obscures critical differences in the underlying structures of these tokens.
Two tokens issued under the same corporate ticker can confer fundamentally different rights to holders. The legal and operational framework—whether the token conveys real ownership of the underlying equity or merely a synthetic claim—determines the protections, risks, and regulatory treatment investors receive. These distinctions have become increasingly relevant as tokenized equity markets mature and attract greater scrutiny from regulators and market participants alike.
