Natarajan Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, has resigned from the conglomerate’s board but will remain in his position until his term concludes, a person with direct knowledge of the matter said on Tuesday.
The resignation from the board, effective immediately, does not alter Chandrasekaran’s role as chairman, which he will continue to fulfill until his current term expires. The move follows recent corporate governance discussions within the Tata Group, though specifics of the decision were not disclosed.
Tata Sons, the holding company of the Tata Group, oversees a diversified portfolio spanning steel, automotive, information technology and energy sectors. Chandrasekaran has led the conglomerate since 2017, steering major strategic initiatives including the initial public offering of Tata Consultancy Services in 2022.
The development comes amid broader scrutiny over corporate governance practices in India’s largest business groups. While the resignation from the board is a procedural step, it does not signal an early exit from his leadership role, the source emphasized.
Tata Group did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
