The Swiss equity market slipped on Wednesday, with the benchmark SMI down 0.4% to 14,271 points as rising oil prices and mounting inflation concerns heightened expectations for tighter monetary policy.
The Mid-Cap SMIM index also retreated 0.4% to 3,081, while the broader SPI declined 0.4% to 20,077. Brent crude futures traded above $95 per barrel after renewed geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, fueling concerns over inflation and prompting speculation that both the European Central Bank and the U.S. Federal Reserve could raise interest rates in the coming weeks. The ECB is widely expected to hike rates next week, while a September increase by the Fed remains a high-probability scenario among investors.

Sector performance showed divergence, with technology (+0.3%), real estate (+0.2%) and healthcare (+0.1%) among the few gainers. Basic materials (-1.6%) led decliners, pressured by Amrize’s drop, while utilities (-0.7%) and non-cyclical consumer goods (-0.9%) also lagged. Nestlé weighed on the latter category with a 0.7% decline.
European banks outperformed with a 0.5% gain, benefiting from elevated bond yields that support fixed-income revenue streams. Deutsche Bank rose 1.9%, Commerzbank gained 1.0%, ING advanced 1.9% and UBS added 0.5%. The gains followed a Goldman Sachs buy rating for Deutsche Bank.
Swiss equities mirrored broader global weakness, with the SMI down 0.4% to 14,280 points, the SMIM down 0.3% to 3,085 and the SPI down 0.3% to 20,084.
