Surf Air Mobility attended the Federal Aviation Administration’s (FAA) launch of Project Nexus on September 10, a collaborative initiative aimed at accelerating the integration of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft into commercial operations. The event took place at Alliance Field in Fort Worth, Texas, with representatives from Surf Air Mobility, BETA Technologies, Joby Aviation, Archer Aviation, and Palantir Technologies among those present.
Project Nexus is designed to facilitate the transition of eVTOL prototypes into routine passenger service, with the first demonstration flights set to begin in Hawaii as early as June 2026. Surf Air Mobility, which operates as a Part 135 scheduled airline and provides private charter services, has already established a significant presence in Hawaii, where Mokulele Airlines manages approximately 112 daily flights. The company’s involvement in the program underscores its ambition to achieve the first commercial passenger eVTOL flight once certified.
The initiative also highlights Surf Air Mobility’s operational and technological capabilities. The company has developed SurfOS, a software platform powered by Palantir Technologies, which supports its fleet management and air traffic coordination. Additionally, Surf Air Mobility participated in a demonstration flight program using BETA’s ALIA electric aircraft through Mokulele Airlines. The company’s focus remains on expanding its role in advanced air mobility, positioning itself as one of the largest commuter airlines in the United States by scheduled departures.
Project Nexus reflects broader efforts by the FAA and industry partners to streamline regulatory and operational hurdles for eVTOL deployment, with North Texas awarded the FAA’s eVTOL Integration Pilot Program initiative. The collaboration aims to demonstrate the feasibility of eVTOLs in commercial aviation, potentially reshaping urban air travel and regional connectivity in the coming years.
