Suncorp Group shares advanced 4.2% to A$18.70 on Tuesday, extending gains tied to a Financial Times report suggesting Japanese insurer Tokio Marine was considering a multi-billion-dollar takeover.
The rally followed speculation that Tokio Marine, already backed by Berkshire Hathaway after a March investment, may pursue a cross-border acquisition. Berkshire’s stake in Tokio Marine included an agreement to collaborate on large-scale international mergers, according to the report. No details were provided on whether formal approaches or deal terms had been discussed.
Suncorp’s move mirrored broader market strength, with the ASX 200 index up 0.7% on the day. The Australian insurer has drawn attention alongside peers IAG and Canada’s Intact Financial as potential targets in a consolidating global insurance sector.
Tokio Marine’s potential bid would mark another step in the sector’s consolidation trend, following Berkshire’s strategic investment in March. The report did not specify timing, valuation, or the likelihood of a transaction.
