Suncorp Holdings Ltd. shares advanced 4.2% to A$18.70 on Tuesday, outpacing the ASX 200’s 0.7% gain, after a report suggested Japanese insurer Tokio Marine was evaluating a multi-billion-dollar takeover.
The Financial Times cited sources familiar with the matter, stating Tokio Marine was considering Suncorp as a leading candidate among potential targets, though no formal approach had been made. The report also mentioned Australian rival IAG and Canada’s Intact Financial as other potential acquisition targets under discussion.
Tokio Marine’s interest follows Berkshire Hathaway’s March investment in the Japanese insurer, which included an agreement to collaborate on large-scale international mergers. The Berkshire stake did not specify any particular targets or deal structures.
Suncorp’s stock movement reflects broader market activity, with the ASX 200 rising modestly alongside gains in the financial sector. The insurer has not commented on the report, and Tokio Marine has not confirmed any discussions regarding a potential bid.
