Standard Bank reported record earnings for the first half of 2026, with a return on equity (ROE) of 19.8%, as growth in its African operations offset broader macroeconomic headwinds.
The Johannesburg-based lender disclosed preliminary financial results in investor presentation slides, highlighting a significant improvement in profitability compared to the same period last year. The 19.8% ROE marked the highest half-year figure in the bank’s history, underscoring strong operational performance across its core markets in sub-Saharan Africa.
Revenue growth was supported by increased lending activity, particularly in corporate and retail banking segments, while cost discipline contributed to margin expansion. The bank did not provide detailed revenue or net income figures in the slides, deferring a full earnings report to a later date.
Analysts noted that Standard Bank’s ability to sustain such returns reflected resilient demand for credit in Africa, despite elevated interest rates and inflationary pressures in some regions. The lender’s exposure to commodity-linked economies and diversified revenue streams were cited as key factors underpinning its performance.
Standard Bank operates as Africa’s largest bank by assets, with a presence in 20 countries across the continent. The results follow a period of strategic expansion, including investments in digital banking infrastructure and partnerships to deepen financial inclusion.
The bank’s management is expected to discuss the results in further detail during an investor call scheduled for later this month.
