Space Exploration Technologies (NASDAQ: SPCX) is centering its growth strategy around artificial intelligence, far beyond its well-known rocket-launching and Starlink satellite operations. The company reported spending $15.8 billion on AI during the second quarter—a figure that dwarfs all other business segments combined.
Total capital expenditures came in at approximately $18.4 billion in Q2. Of that, Starlink received $1.4 billion and the space and rockets division $1.2 billion. That leaves $15.8 billion allocated to AI-related projects.
Among the company's most ambitious AI aspirations are orbital data centers, which SpaceX has touted as a potentially transformative solution to two of the largest bottlenecks facing the industry: power consumption and cooling. Positioned in orbit, these facilities would have far more direct access to solar energy and could leverage superior heat-diffusion in the vacuum of space, eliminating the need for water-based cooling systems that constrain ground-based facilities.
However, it remains unclear how much of the $15.8 billion AI spend was directed specifically toward orbital data center development. On the company's Q2 conference call, CEO Elon Musk placed greater emphasis on terrestrial data centers, noting that SpaceX's rocketry and space engineering expertise could improve the design and construction of data centers on Earth.
Market observers note that even a full failure of the orbital data center concept would likely not prove catastrophic for investors. SpaceX's diversified operations across launch services, satellite internet and AI could cushion any setbacks from the orbital initiative. The scale of spending is significant, but the company's other business lines provide a financial buffer.
The disconnect between SpaceX's orbital ambitions and Musk's public focus on Earth-based infrastructure adds uncertainty for investors evaluating the $15.8 billion outlay. Whether the company's AI investments, orbital or otherwise, will ultimately translate into proportional returns remains an open question.
