South Africa’s annual inflation rate declined to 4.3% in July from 5.0% in June, according to official data released on Wednesday.
The reading matched the median estimate of some analysts but fell short of the LSEG consensus forecast of 4.5%. The inflation rate now sits just above the South African Reserve Bank’s (SARB) target range of 3% plus or minus 1 percentage point.
Analysts anticipate the recent moderation to be short-lived, with headline inflation projected to rise again in early 2027. This outlook suggests the SARB is likely to maintain its current monetary policy settings in the near term, despite the temporary easing in price pressures.
Market expectations for additional monetary easing have strengthened, with some analysts noting potential scope for cuts beyond current projections starting in the second quarter of 2025.
