SoftBank Group Corp. shares declined 2.9% to close at ¥5,105 on Monday, extending losses after the company announced plans to issue approximately ¥1 trillion in retail bonds.
The offering, the largest ever by a Japanese firm, has raised concerns over SoftBank’s leverage and debt sustainability. Investors also cited broader skepticism about the pace of returns from AI-related investments, which have driven valuations higher in recent years.
The stock’s decline follows weeks of pressure on technology equities amid rising global bond yields, which have weighed on growth-oriented sectors. The Tokyo market remained relatively subdued, with the Nikkei 225 index largely flat for the session.
SoftBank’s bond issuance underscores its reliance on debt financing to fund expansion, particularly in AI and technology ventures. The move comes as investors reassess the profitability of high-valuation tech assets amid tightening financial conditions worldwide.
